Cherry Merry Muffin :: 1st Series Dolls

"Sweet smelling world of muffin magic!"

Cherry Merry Muffin were produced in 1988-1990 by Mattel and were 6.5 inches high dolls, scented like their names (like Strawberry Shortcake). Along with the dolls and their accessories, there were also playsets, fashion wear and miniatures made.

1st Series Dolls [1988]

"Cherry Merry Muffin dolls are the adorable fantasy food characters with yummy scents and transformable accessories. Designed for hours and hours of fantasy play. Dolls have silky hair and pretty pastel costumes, and each smells like her name - cherry, banana, chocolate, blueberry and apple. Even their plastic “pop-up" muffins are scented! Each doll also has a cute helper to help her in the kitchen: Cherry Sweet shakes cherry magic on muffin treats, Chocolate Drop cuts out heart shapes, Bitty Banana is a measuring spoon, Li'l Dip is a ladle, and Apple Buddy is a pitcher."

There were five dolls produced in 1988 and were muffin themed. Each doll had curly hair/wavy with bows in, wore dresses with aprons and had little painted-on shoes. The dresses had little plastic muffins sewn on their chests.

Each doll came with four accessories:

  • Flavour Friend
  • Muffin Comb
  • 6 Scented Muffins (joined together)
  • Muffin Pan

Cherry Merry Muffin

She came with Cherry Sweet sugar shaker.

There were two variations of her apron, one with stripes and one without. There seems to be no obvious reason for this.

This version of CMM also came with the gift set version of the Snack 'N Serve playset.

Apple Amy

She came with Apple Buddy jug.

Banancy

She came with Bitty Banana measuring spoon.

Betty Berry

She came with Li'l Dip ladle.

Chocolottie

She came with Chocolate Drop cookie cutter.

Publicity & Packaging

I have found two types of packaging for the original set of dolls. The packaging with the pink "Cherry Merry Muffin" font and yellow arch behind appears to have only been used for this set of five dolls. The plain yellow lettering with no background colour was used for every other set made.

The dolls name and scent were swapped over from one design to the other, and also note the differences between the logo featured underneath the CMM text.

The back illustrations were quite different. The illustrations on the right were also used on the playsets produced for the 1st series dolls.

Euro packaging was included several languages and used the most common style of CMM font. I've not come across any Euro packaging with the yellow background arch.
